When you genuinely love a person, and it’s not just carnal lust, that’s when you become romantic. You can’t force it, or will it into happening; you have to really be in love. Once you pressure yourself to be more romantic, you’re going to seem like a smooth creep, a sleazeball. A con artist. Everyone will see through that.
Being in love with someone means you care for that person: you don’t want any harm to come to them, you want them to be comfortable, and happy. You look out for them. That is the basis of being romantic. If you don’t really care at heart anyway, any gesture, present or surprise dinner will just be pantomime.
I’ve been genuinely in love a handful of times. Twice it was answered, mostly it wasn’t, as those things go. It’s always a little embarrassing when you get rebuffed. Some people immediately take it out on their object of affection: that’s when you know it wasn’t real love in the first place, but a trick, a scheme that backfired.
So how can you be more romantic? Be kind, considerate, less egocentric—and most of all, in love.
